About Kate Sutter

Kate Sutter, narrator extraordinaire of the Lesbian Adventure Club book series

Spooked

There are only a few hours left before NaNoWriMo begins and the author can finally put fingers to keyboard. There are not too many things worse than a writer who cannot write … okay, except maybe Susan singing Kumbaya. I still have nightmares about that. But anyway, Hallow’s Eve becomes NaNo Eve, and we’re not sure whether to be excited, supportive, or run for the frickin’ hills.

Right before dropping to her knees to pathetically beg, she gave us the mother of all lectures on how this wasn’t simply her attempting a literary stunt. She, in fact, believes … or wants to believe … or desperately needs to believe that there are 11 of us about to bungie jump off a wordy cliff. She has asked us to step up and let our weekend play out in a linear and coherent manner. We have been warned about tangents. (Tangents? Us?) We have been instructed to stay with this book and not jump into any others. She says we can be our obnoxious selves as long as it pertains to Lore Mongers. Then, she bribes us with cookies and ice cream. That worked rather well, but then I think she wondered how we’d be after the sugar buzz wore off, and, yes, that was when she dropped to knees.

So, it would seem that at this moment in time, we hold enormous sway. That elicits temptations galore, but we’ll let that sway swell for a bit and prepare to jump with her. (I hate heights, did you know that?)

Cross your fingers—for her and us. Wish her a good night’s sleep, and, Jesus, somebody hide the candy. When she awakens tomorrow morning, we shall once again be the center of attention. Let the LAC weekend begin.

Oh, and keep an eye on that NaNo counter over there. It had damn well better move each night, or we will be running for the hills. Oh, and the cool mil… If she keeps up with the daily minimum of 1,667 words, she should be reaching that big milestone on Sunday or Monday.

NaNoWeirdo

Okay, it’s not even NaNoWriMo, and she’s already acting strangely. She now has a cover and a blurb for a book that doesn’t even exist, that won’t exist until the end of November, if she’s lucky. Talk about bass-ackwards!

She’s toiling away on an outline. Like she’s ever done that. Like she even knows how. Like an LAC weekend could possibly adhere to an outline! Challenges are good for the soul, she says, but we would know. Living in her head at the moment is a challenge all by itself, and our souls feel no good-er.

Also in her prep for November, she’s been stockpiling Halloween candy that I suspect has nothing to do with trick-or-treaters. Oh, and music, she’s loading up on that, too. And in her quest to find mood music for writing this book, she did find what she believes is Claudia’s and my theme song for LAC weekend nights. See what you think here.

Anyway, here’s the cover for the nonexistent LAC 16, Lore Mongers…

And speaking of bass-ackwards, here’s the blurb for the nonexistent LAC 16…

Once more, Ginny and Kris are sending the crew backwards. This time, they’re headed to the end of their first scavenger hunt, and the task given there will force them back to the very beginning of time. Confused? Join the club.

Last-Second Parachute

There we were: having fallen off the face of the earth. Scary prospect. But, alas, we are still kickin’ in our usual obnoxious style. I’m sure you consider yourselves blessed. 🙂

Anyway, the author has been very busy with her own life lately and not just ours. However, she has been working on LAC 16 research and plotting, and odds are good she will grab that accumulation of work to land prepared on this first day of NaNoWriMo, November 1st. Last year she didn’t decide/commit until the mid-morning of and then spent the rest of the month scrambling, starving, and screaming. She even had to accept “rebel status” because she used a project she had already begun work on (Sutures), and when she finished that one, she jumped onto the fresh page of a new story she hadn’t even had time to think of. Oh yes, the author was very ill-prepared, and saved, if I remember correctly, by a tangent of Laura’s and mine … something to do with a moron in a barrel. She did reach the goal of 50,000 words.

With that 20/20 hindsight stuff, she’s planning on being thoroughly prepared this time and on starting LAC 16 from word one. We’re placing bets in here on whether or not that preparation will actually prevent the scrambling, starving, and screaming. I haven’t yet decided where I’m placing my coffee money. She can be very quiet and disciplined on some occasions, but I think maybe at her core she has that “hurts-so-good” kind of process. We shall see. Regardless, somewhere in there she will reach her own goal of 1,000,000 words.

So… LAC 16 is a Kris and Ginny weekend. God help us all. We’re traveling out of town, but I won’t say where, but, no, it’s not Crappie Cabin. Oh, and its title gets an L-Word+1.

Things to look forward to … like a parachute opening at the very last second.

Blessed Word Count

Okay, with Smooched officially finished, her word count is 993,314 and 6,686 to go. The screeching halt continues.

A warm birthday wish goes out to Scooter … and a little sympathy for her not having reached the goal on his birthday. If he’s declawed, we’d give him birthday high-fives. Well, except for Laura, who’d probably do so anyway, catty being that she is.

Quest for Cool Mil Goes Cold

She gets a bump on the Mil-O-Meter to 992,758. That leaves 7,242 words to go, and that leaves this reporter with good news and bad news to impart.

The Good News: She has completed the first draft of Smooched and is well into the edit.

The Bad News: Her word count now comes to a screeching halt and may even decrease as she finishes up. That does not bode well for Scooter’s August 13th birthday. Plus, she’s actually going to take a vacation, beginning the 17th. Trust me, though, we will be tagging along, as she has yet to find a way to stifle us, short of decapitation. Laura says that’s awfully messy, and Kris believes she’d miss us if we weren’t clamoring in there.

Anyway, she’s pushing to have the book done and released before vacation. We’ll shush while that happens and then start driving her insane with new ideas.

LAC 15 Chapter 2

As promised, here’s the second chapter of Smooched. If you haven’t read Chapter 1 yet, you’d be well advised to click here first.

Chapter 2

We had no idea precisely what the government’s business was, but still, we wasted no time jumping right into the bitching and moaning portion of the program. Afterall, this was it: They were going to mess with us in a way that would force us to mess with each other. A quick scan gave me four crybaby grimaces.

“First order of business,” Girl Friday began. “We are all strangers again, just like last time. Not couples. Not friends. Strangers.” Her eyes traveled to both couples who had kissy-faced, and then she let loose with what I deemed a mortal sin, “No more all over each other, or even being close, for that matter.” Then she did something that frickin’ blew us all away. She said, “And that goes for the mayor and me, too. We’ll be participating, and we’ve figured out a way to level the playing field. You’ll see.” With an elbow, she thrust the imaginary microphone to the mayor.

“The second order of business,” Mayor Alison said. “As strangers, you’ll again be sleeping separately, but this time, we won’t even be bunking you up with someone else. You’ll need to be alone, the why of which will be clearer soon.”

Girl Friday said, “Even though this house is big, it does not have ten bedrooms.” She pointed to our mountain of belongings near the foyer. “You have sleeping bags so we’ll improvise.”

“We’ll draw numbers, and we’ll have our detective monitor the drawing so you all know it’s not rigged by us.” She smiled and said, “We’re one of you this time. You’ll just have to trust us.”

Yet Another Another

Yes! She has passed 990,000! There are 9,921 words to go, and that sounds an awful lot like the homestretch to me. Okay … except for the fact that she’s nearing the end of LAC 15, and the subsequent edit will bring everything to a screeching halt. Hmm…

How about we apply a wee bit of pressure? I’ll swipe Chapter 2 very soon and post it. Maybe if she knows you guys are revved, she’ll rev. Maybe she’ll zip to the end of this one and hurry onto the next. You never know. Miracles happen. Okay, maybe only in the fictional world, but as luck would have it…

In the meantime, if you haven’t read Chapter 1 or you need a refresher, you can read it here. Then when you read Chapter 2 (soon, I swear), you’ll at least understand why its S-word title is Smooched.

And Another…

She’s crept up to 99%, leaving her with 12,908 to go!

At the moment, she’s on the last chapter of LAC 15. Even if we got horribly windy and sidetracked, which we have been known to do on occasion, I don’t think she’ll hit the million mark with this book. 😥

Then, once she finishes 15, there will be a major lull with her numbers while she edits the first draft. She’s close, but it could be a long while yet, and Scooter’s birthday (August 13) is still within the realm of possibilities.

Sympathies to those whose predicted dates have passed. Good luck to those whose dates still hang in the balance. And, DWD high fives all the way around.
